Crystal lore
Some practitioners of alternative medicine think these stones actually possess therapeutic abilities.
A widespread notion holds that crystals have an effect on the body's energy fields, also referred to as vibrational energy. With their distinctive energetic frequencies, crystals are said to be able to reroute and re-channel energy flow, assisting in clearing blocked or "stuck" parts of the body or energy field.
Cosmic energy healer Eva Antoniadou claims that crystals have strong healing properties and that when we touch them, healing is instantaneously triggered.
The interaction between the crystal vibrations and the body's inherent energetic frequency is believed to leave the body feeling clear, relaxed, and focused.
According to Polack, "crystals collect energy from pressure and movement and turn it into an electrical frequency." Since many pain and anxiety alleviation devices operate on similar principles, we do believe crystals can aid in these areas. Users rely on this frequency, which is specific to each type of crystal.
Crystal science
There is essentially no scientific evidence to support crystal healing.
In a study done in 1880, the brothers Pierre and Jack Curie discovered that adjusting the temperature and pressure of crystals might produce electricity.
The term "piezoelectric effect" refers to this. It is utilized in technology such as
1. microphones
2. quartz timepieces
3. a laser printer
4. medical implants
5. sonar
Although it is still debatable if holding crystals has any healing potential, research by the Curie brothers reveals that it may have a negligible impact on the body's energy levels.
In 1999 and 2001, C.C. French presented a different study on crystals and healing at two international conferences, but it was never published in a peer-reviewed publication.
80 participants in the study received either real crystals or imitation crystals. Six individuals said they had no feelings. The remainder said they saw a shift in their energy.
In other words, the imitation crystals were equally efficient, indicating that the placebo effect may have been at play.
"It is suggesting that the power of crystals is in the mind instead of in the crystals," psychologist Richard Wiseman said at the time, according to The Telegraph.
Even some crystal healers believe that the placebo effect is where crystals' true power rests.
For instance, Polack thinks that crystals function through causing changes in energy frequency in addition to the placebo effect.
She claims that a placebo, which is effective in and of itself, combined with the aforementioned energetic qualities of some crystals, "definitely seem to have a significant impact on the body."
